Artist Statement: “This piece speaks to my fascination with leaves, language, and maps. The magnolia trees of Annapolis have surrounded me with years of leaves, blooms, and seed pods. I am still deciphering their maps...”
I cannot think that far back:
to when they began dropping pages from an ancient atlas.
delivered, wind driven,
tapping out a code across the road.
At first, it's the silvery sheen that attracts me:
the feel of thin dried vellum.
Then I am drawn into the markings:
islands, seas, trails.
I marvel at worlds I don't yet know.
Three boys in a land of handy vine ropes and stick swords
pass me by.
They know where they're going
because they have their own maps.
