On-site registration is mandatory for new students, for students transferring from Santa Fe, and for other students who haven't received class schedules. Registration is held on the first day of the semester in the Barr-Buchanan Center.
Please download the Student Handbook; students should be sure to read through the relevant sections.
Orientation Seminar for New Students
All new students participate in a seminar on Plato's Meno, 70-86d, on the day prior to the start of the semester in the spring and summer, and on the first day of the fall semester.
Convocation is the occasion when new students are welcomed into the College. It takes place in the Great Hall of McDowell at the beginning of each semester. Returning and transfer students are warmly encouraged to attend. This is a somewhat formal event, and students should dress accordingly. If a new student must miss convocation, he or she should notify the Graduate Institute office ahead of time.
The Graduate Council is a representative body of graduate students whose purposes include the following five items:
Two representatives from each seminar are elected to the Council at the beginning of each term, but all students are encouraged to attend meetings and offer student insight into any aspect of the St. John's experience for the Council to discuss.
Mailboxes and Campus Mail
Mailboxes are re-assigned to all students each semester. Students are responsible for checking their box frequently for notices of academic matters and social events. Students who expect to receive mail from outside the college should have it sent in their name to St. John's College, 60 College Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401. For any questions please contact the Assistant Dean's Office.
St. John's E-mail Accounts
All students are required to activate their St. John's email accounts when they first enroll, and are responsible for checking their email regularly throughout their enrollment. Students are strongly urged to register for "e2campus," the St. John's security alert system. The college Information Technology Office will activate students' email accounts."
Photo-identification 1Cards are made for all new students, and each semester are re-validated for continuing students. Each student must have a current St. John's College photo-identification 1Card. 1Cards are used to access campus buildings, purchase study materials, and check out books at the library.
Students who plan to park on campus must register their vehicles each term for campus parking permits. The Security Office in Pinkney Hall sells parking permits for $50/semester.
The St. John's Bookstore stocks all texts on the reading list. Phone: 410-626-2540.
Regular Social Events
The General Hartle Room is reserved for regular after-seminar gatherings on Monday evenings. The Graduate Council organizes and hosts these in addition to the occasional after-preceptorial gathering on Thursday and other events over the course of each term. The Graduate Council seeks new members at the beginning of each term, and students are encouraged to participate.
