Annapolis - Volunteer Opportunities
The Stanton Community Center is located at 92 West Washington Street in Annapolis. The Stanton Community Center is a community resource for children and adults. Community organization offices are located in this building and provide children and adults with recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities and health, medical, therapeutic, and counseling services.
The center features many offices, multi-purpose gymnasium, a commercial kitchen, fitness area, historic classroom, media center with computers, and two conference/meeting rooms. Volunteer opportunities abound, but there is a history of St. John's students volunteering at the center to work with local young people after school.
Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis
The Boys and girls club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County provides a variety of educational and recreational activities for young people.
There are many different types of volunteers and by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator your skill set, interest and enthusiasm can easily be matched to short or long term volunteer position. Whether you have specialized skills or just love to be around kids, there are many opportunities within our Clubs to volunteer.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools have a program called AVID, which moves students (who must apply and interview for admittance to the program) from the academic "middle" and places them into more rigorous college-preparatory coursework while providing additional academic support. One example of this additional academic support, is the regularly availability of tutors on-site at schools.
The AVID program has a need for volunteer tutors to help out at local schools. This is a great opportunity to work with motivated students and help them to reach their goal of attending college!
Opportunities with Eastport Elementary School and Bloomsbury Square
The College's Senior Resident for Volunteer Services maintains contact with local officials who are often able to match up an individual St. John's College student with a young person in a local community who could benefit from tutoring. Specifically, there is a contact for both Eastport Elementary School and Bloomsbury Square, the neighborhood adjacent to Gilliam and Spector Halls
If you are interested in working one-on-one with a local student, please contact: the Senior Resident for Volunteer Services at firstname.lastname@example.org
