One of three tutorials at St. John’s, the language tutorial helps students increase their powers of communication through the study of ancient Greek, French, and English. The language tutorial consists of the following:

Who?

From 12 to 16 students and one faculty member, called a tutor, in conversation around a table.

When?

Three classes per week in each of the four years.

What?

The study of ancient Greek in the first two years and French in the junior and senior years, along with the study of classic works in ancient Greek, French, and English literature.

How?

Through the study of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Through the careful translation of classic texts from ancient Greek and French into English. Through writing papers and discussing them with language tutors in individual conferences.

Why?

To reflect upon the nature of language in general and upon English in particular. To develop skills of argument and communication through intensive conversation about language and its effective use as well as through regular writing. To come to a better understanding of the texts through careful reading and precise translation.
