What have you
done with your
St. John’s
education?
My St. John’s education
has enabled me to think
in ways that bring me
to novel and interesting
research projects. My
work is and has always
been interdisciplinary,
spanning mathematics,
statistics, computer
science, neurobiology,
physics, chemistry,
and cognitive and
behavioral psychology.
Dr. Leslie Kay ’82
Los Angeles, California
Associate professor and director, Institute of
Mind & Biology, University of Chicago
This is the essence
of my St. John’s
education and is the
future of science in
this country. The old
disciplinary boundaries
often make little
sense, and it takes
training that focuses
on ideas and not
disciplines to make this
transition seamless.
What skills
gained at
St. John’s have
had the biggest
impact on your
career?
The skill to be able to
speak confidently to a
group of people in a
meeting setting. I gained
that from seminar (and
really all my classes),
where peer-to-peer
interaction is necessary.
Mr. Juan Villaseñor ’97
Nashville, Tennessee
Assistant U.S. attorney, U.S. Attorney’s Office
I am not intimidated to
speak in those settings to
people in positions of
authority, principally
because at St. John’s, the
authoritative role of the
tutor is de-emphasized.
I highly value this skill,
which I often use in my
professional interactions.
