Have you had
any “eureka”
moments at
St. John’s?
I chose to write on
Plato’s “Phaedrus” for
my senior essay. This
in and of itself was a
“
eureka” moment. I had
never paid much attention
to Plato—I thought his
head was in the clouds
when I read him in

my freshman seminar.
But in the discussions
I had with my paper
adviser, Mr. Braithwaite,
throughout this past
semester, I discovered
a whole world of
thoughts and questions
I had never let myself
see. I discovered
something very important
to me by choosing a
work that I knew would
be a challenge.
How would
you describe
a typical day at
the college?
My typical senior-year
Friday goes a little like
this: Wake up to my
howling four alarms at
7:20,
shower, and then
gulp down a cup of tea on
my eight-minute walk to
the library to do some
homework and prepare for
Lab, which goes from
10:20
to 11:45. After-
wards, I try to grab a quick
lunch with a tutor, and sit
outside of my math class
to prepare a Lobachevski
proof, or try to work my
way through Einstein’s
spontaneous musings.
Math starts at one, and

because we are so excited
we usually talk past its
end time (2:10). Once
math is over, I head down
to the lobby of Mellon’s
Hodson Room to sit and
read on the ridiculously
comfortable chairs. This
often leads to a nap before
my 2 ½-hour rehearsal
with Primum Mobile (an
audition-based quartet
that sings Renaissance
masses in the pendulum
pit). After Primum Mobile,
a few of us go downtown
for dinner and ice cream
before the Friday night
lecture, and once lecture
is over I meet up with my
roommate and some
friends from other local
colleges and go into D.C.
for the night.
