What is a
question?
Think about it.
If a question is a symptom of curiosity, it contains the
incentive for its own undoing. If it is the quest for an
answer, it is also the generator of further questions. It
is a tool that prompts the creation of tools—and one
that leads us to look beyond them. It is the response of
humans fromtime immemorial to the condition of being.
As it accepts ignorance, it ensures humility. It preserves
democracy by challenging those in authority. It reveals
the self by challenging assumptions.
At St. John’s, a question is a conversation starter.
It initiates unbounded thinking and shared response,
and as it does, it drives an education of significance.
How does a St. John’s education work? There is no
better way to learn than by asking questions. We hope
those in this book will make you want to ask more.
